Sports Day 2019

After a couple of frustrating postponements due to weather, our Annual Sports Day finally took place in March and it was well worth the wait! With approximately 600 pupils taking part and over 250 events and heats it proved to be the busiest Sports Day to date. The carnival atmosphere under clear blue skies underpinned with serious competitive intent was a real cacophony of sound and colour. The Junior competition (a decathlon involving running, jumping and throwing for all pupils) was won by the Green Machine (Theseus), the Relay trophy (Senior 4 x 100m relays from F1 to U6 was tied by the Yellow Perils (Hercules) and the Red Devils (Amazon) and the Senior trophy, which was announced in assembly, with the late completion of 600m & 800m, was won by the House in Yellow, Hercules. In the end the victory margin was very small with only 16 points separating Hercules and Theseus in 2nd. In total there was a sensational total of 25 records broken which was the most ever. Some of the 16 4 x100m relay records had stood for well over 20 years, broken by quartet of talented, hard working athletes, a superb running surface and some decent training!
A special thanks to all the pupils, parents and teachers who made the day a success. Also, of course, to our highly inspirational guest speaker, Mr George Andreou – the first man from Cyprus to climb Mount Everest! The audience were left spellbound by his words of wisdom and encouragement, whereas when I spoke it was a case of “Come on Mr Relton, it’s time to go”!
