LED - Learning and Educational Development

The LED (Learning and Educational Development) Programme provides structured, targeted support to ensure every pupil can meet and exceed academic expectations. Proactive rather than reactive, LED identifies potential challenges early, before they impact performance. The programme removes barriers to learning, whether academic, linguistic, organisational or confidence-based, through personalised interventions that build independence, resilience and self-belief.

Placement in LED is guided by a holistic review of academic data, classroom performance, literacy and language needs (including EAL), subject-specific gaps, study skills and wellbeing indicators. Decisions are made collaboratively between subject teachers, pastoral leaders and the LED team to ensure a coordinated and strategic approach.

LED delivers focused academic support through a variety of methods, depending on the pupil’s needs. One-to-one tutoring, small group sessions, in-class reinforcement and subject-specific guidance from KS3 to KS5. At KS3, the programme centres on the core subjects: English, Mathematics and the Sciences. At KS4 and KS5, support becomes increasingly subject-specific, with particular emphasis on academic language development, writing structure, vocabulary, grammar, reading comprehension and exam technique.

The model is clear and cyclical: identification, targeted intervention, classroom application and measurable improvement. Alongside academic support, pupils receive mentoring in organisation, time management, motivation and independent learning strategies, including dedicated academic mentoring in the Sixth Form. Teaching is adaptive, using differentiated materials, scaffolded instruction and appropriate stretch and challenge techniques.

Progress is carefully monitored through session records, academic data, engagement indicators and regular cross-departmental review, ensuring support evolves as pupils develop. The aim is not dependency, but the growth of confident, self-directed learners.

At Foley’s, LED reflects our commitment to personalised learning within a rigorous academic environment, supporting ability, recognising potential and empowering every pupil to succeed.
